Happy Sunday!
I just started binge-watching the series The Big Door Prize - have you seen it?
A small town is forever changed when a mysterious machine appears, promising to reveal everyone's true potential. Soon, residents start changing jobs, rethinking relationships and questioning long-held beliefs.
Apparently the show is marmite, but I easily fall into the LOVE IT camp. It asks so many great questions. Like - how would you feel if your friend’s purpose was Hero and yours was Laundress? Or what if you had missed your purpose all together?
It reminds me of something Elizabeth Gilbert said a few months ago at the weekend workshop in London. As she was welcoming everyone into the room, she admitted to feeling a little anxious. She was worried that we had all paid big money to come to this workshop to discover our purpose… To figure out the one thing that only we can do.
“No pressure.” She said, “I mean, there are eight billion people in the world, and your purpose could be absolutely anything from dog walking to neuroscience, but you need to find it and change the world with it.”
Then she went on to say (and I’m paraphrasing here) fuck that shit. We could probably do with fewer people trying to change the world. What if your purpose is simply to be a loving presence to those around you?
*Sigh.*
Some of us (it’s me, 👋) attempt to be pathologically productive and are endlessly worried about living up to our potential. What would it feel like to stop all that and just enjoy life for a while? Less hustle. Less grind. Less trying so hard…
Relief, I think. Which feels like a good way to kick off summer.

Love it camp here too!
I loved 'The Big Door Prize' too, everyone was so entrusting to its 'all-knowing' ability.
Do we secretly all just want to be told what to do. 😉
